    Senior Environmental Technician – Industrial Pretreatment

    Colorado Springs Utilities Industrial Pretreatment (IPT) section is seeking a Senior Environmental Technician knowledgeable in compliance programs related to wastewater regulations. In this job, your essential responsibilities will be significant industrial user permitting, providing support to sector control programs (such as fats, oil, and grease), sampling, evaluating industrial user surveys, and various other tasks pertaining to the industrial pretreatment program. If you are technically skilled, have a background in environmental regulatory work, have a keen attention to detail, AND are a team player, then this position may be for you!

    Pay Range $27.50 to $31.62

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Performing industrial permitting activities, including permit issuance and management, facility inspections, reporting, sampling, enforcement, and providing support to permitted industrial customers
    • Performing sector control program support and coordination;  may require users to install sector-specific control systems or make changes to methods of waste disposal  
    • Performing investigative field work. Evaluating waste of non-domestic users. Verifying information provided by industrial users. Recommending and completing program compliance enforcement under the direction of the supervisor
    • Interfacing with various constituents and providing answers and information regarding program requirements, details, and specifications
    • Installing, programming, maintaining, and troubleshooting IPT’s monitoring, data recording, and automatic sampling equipment
    • Collecting and preserving industrial effluent, wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system samples for the evaluation of wastewater disposal activities within the collection system, to include standard IPT monitoring and investigating abnormal discharges
    • Interpreting data, reviewing, preparing and analyzing technical reports; maintaining required reports, including data entry and evaluation as well as report management
    • Implementing quality assurance procedures

    What will it take to be successful in this position?  Most people in this position will have an Associate’s Degree and 4+ years of progressively responsible experience with environmental regulatory work. The ideal candidate will have experience in industrial pretreatment, wastewater compliance, wastewater treatment, or industrial hygiene. Knowledge of manufacturing processes as sources of industrial waste and/or an understanding of wastewater treatment are desired. This job requires an acute attention to detail and substantial reading and comprehension skills. Professional writing skills and appropriate use of English grammar are critical.     Additionally, part of the role is sampling water and/or wastewater from various sources, and in this process, there will be associated handling of equipment and containers (including but not limited to small sample bottles, 5-gallon carboys, large autosamplers, etc.), as well as moving iron manhole covers; physical exertion, pulling and lifting is required.
